Why become a medical sonographer? There’s a lot of strong reinforcement that sonography is a job with a bright future. In 2015 the US Department of Labor (DOL) posted the top 10 jobs they expected to see the most growth between 2012 and 2022. All 10 of those jobs are in or related to the medical field. Incredible right? Some might attribute this to the fact that life expectancy is increasing each and every year. The good news is that medical diagnostic sonographer is the #6 job on the fastest growing list. Even better news, of the top 10 fastest growing jobs, it carries the second highest median annual salary.
What does that mean for you? Well, it means your future could be brighter than most. While the average growth of jobs across the board is about 11 percent, the DOL projects growth of 46% for medical diagnostic sonographer jobs. That’s more than four times the average growth rate! DOL projects about 27,000 new jobs will be created in this 10 year time period. With a national median income for sonographers coming in at over $66,000 yearly, your bank account won’t be bare. If you’re hired at an hourly rate, you can expect around $30.60 an hour.
